KNEE PAIN
What is knee pain?
Knee pain can originate from muscles, ligaments, tendons, cartilage, or the joint itself. It can cause stiffness, swelling, discomfort, or limited movement, affecting both sports performance and everyday activities. At MTE Rehab & Performance, located in Redruth, we assess and manage knee pain, helping patients from Camborne, Pool, Hayle, Truro, Falmouth, Helston, and Penzance recover safely.
Types of knee pain
Muscle strains around the knee – small tears in quadriceps, hamstrings, or calf muscles.
Ligament injuries – including ACL, MCL, LCL or PCL sprains from twisting or impact.
Tendon issues – such as patellar or quadriceps tendinopathy from overuse.
Cartilage or meniscus injuries – tears or irritation causing pain and swelling.
Overuse/repetitive strain – gradual pain from repeated movements in sports or daily life.
Common causes of knee pain
Quadriceps and hamstrings – strains can occur in running, jumping, or kicking in sports. Everyday examples include climbing stairs too quickly, slipping, or standing up from a low chair.
Calves – injuries can happen when pushing off or landing awkwardly in sports. Daily life causes include stepping off curbs, walking uphill, or sudden changes in direction while carrying objects.
Ligaments – injuries from pivoting, twisting, or sudden stops in sports. General population examples include twisting while walking on uneven ground, slipping, or tripping.
Tendons – irritation from repeated jumping or running in sports. Everyday examples include stair climbing, kneeling repeatedly, or standing for long periods.
Meniscus/cartilage – tears or irritation from twisting or impact in sports. Day-to-day causes include bending and twisting while lifting, kneeling, or getting up from chairs awkwardly.
