MUSCLE INJURIES

What is a muscle injury?
A muscle injury occurs when the fibres in a muscle are overstretched, torn, or otherwise damaged. These injuries can happen during sports, exercise, or daily activities, causing pain, swelling, weakness, or limited movement. Muscle injuries can affect any part of the body, but common areas we treat as part of our injury assessment & management services at MTE Rehab & Performance, located in Redruth, include the hamstrings, quadriceps, calves, adductors (groin), glutes, and muscles of the upper and lower back. We regularly help patients travelling from Camborne, Pool, Hayle, Truro, Falmouth, Helston, and Penzance.

Types of muscle injuries

  • Muscle tears – damage to the muscle, ranging from partial to complete tears.

  • Contusions (bruises) – caused by direct impact, leading to bleeding and swelling within the muscle.

  • Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) – temporary soreness following intense or unfamiliar activity.

Common muscle injuries by area

  • Hamstrings – often injured during running, sprinting, or sudden acceleration in sports. For day-to-day activities, they can be strained when bending down quickly, slipping, or lifting heavy objects incorrectly, causing pain at the back of the thigh.

Quadriceps – front thigh muscles can be strained during kicking, jumping, or explosive movements in sports. Everyday examples include climbing stairs too quickly, getting up from a low chair, or slipping while walking.

Calves – injuries in the gastrocnemius or soleus can occur during running, jumping, or pushing off the foot in sports. Daily life examples include walking uphill, stepping awkwardly off a curb, or sudden movements while carrying heavy items.

Adductors / groin – common in sports involving sudden changes of direction, kicking, or side-stepping. General population examples include slipping sideways, stepping into a wide stance awkwardly, or pulling muscles while gardening or lifting.

Glutes – can be strained in running, squatting, or heavy lifting in sports. Everyday causes include lifting heavy bags, getting up from a low chair, or twisting while moving furniture.

Upper back muscles – injuries to the trapezius, rhomboids, or other stabilising muscles can occur from lifting, posture strain, or sports movements. For daily life, these can happen from prolonged computer use, carrying heavy backpacks, or awkward lifting.

Lower back muscles – often injured through overuse, lifting, poor movement patterns, or sudden twists in sports. Day-to-day examples include bending incorrectly to lift objects, twisting while reaching for something, or prolonged sitting with poor posture.
