ANKLE INJURIES

What are ankle injuries?
Ankle injuries can involve muscles, ligaments, tendons, or bones in and around the ankle joint. They often cause pain, swelling, stiffness, or instability, affecting both sports performance and everyday activities. At MTE Rehab & Performance, located in Redruth, we assess and manage ankle injuries, helping patients from Camborne, Pool, Hayle, Truro, Falmouth, Helston, and Penzance recover safely.

Types of ankle injuries

  • Ligament sprains – tears or stretches in the lateral or medial ligaments from twisting or rolling the ankle.

  • Tendon injuries – Achilles or peroneal tendon strains or tendinopathy from overuse.

  • Muscle strains around the ankle – small tears in calf muscles affecting ankle movement.

  • Fractures or stress fractures – cracks in the bones due to trauma or overuse.

  • Overuse/repetitive strain – gradual pain from repeated movements in sports or daily life.

Common causes of ankle injuries

  • Ligaments – sprains often occur in sports involving running, jumping, or sudden direction changes. Everyday examples include stepping off a curb awkwardly, slipping on uneven surfaces, or twisting the ankle while carrying items.

  • Tendons – injuries can occur in sprinting, jumping, or rapid acceleration in sports. Daily life examples include climbing stairs, running to catch transport, or walking on uneven ground.

  • Muscles – calf strains can happen in kicking, running, or pushing off in sports. Day-to-day examples include rising onto tiptoes, walking uphill, or sudden movements at home.

  • Fractures/stress injuries – typically from falls, impacts, or repetitive strain in sports. General population examples include slipping in the kitchen, tripping outdoors, or minor falls at home.

  • Overuse – irritation from repetitive movement in sports, or daily activities like walking long distances, standing for extended periods, or wearing unsuitable footwear.
